About Vital Voices

Vital Voices Global Partnership grew out of the U.S. government’s Vital Voices Democracy Initiative, which was established in 1997 by First Lady of the United States Hillary Rodham Clinton and U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. Vital Voices works in Africa, Asia, Eurasia, Latin America and the Caribbean and the Middle East and North Africa, focusing on the business, political and civil society sectors. The organization hosts international forums, capacity-building workshops, and training seminars for women. Originating in the U.S., the idea of mentoring walks was Geraldine Laybourne’s response to requests for advice from aspiring women leaders. The Founder and former CEO of Oxygen Media would invite young women to meet her for a morning walk. It became a routine for Laybourne, and an invaluable opportunity for women who wanted to learn from her experience and perspective.
